Week 8

Hi!

Here’s my progress for Week 8. I've included my external feedback, script and sketches for my motion graphics video, and punch list for this week. In regards to my feedback, it was great to share my progress with my colleagues. They were very helpful and provided great insight around the MPLS Voter Guide. One item we discussed was having Puerto Ricans feel a part of the campaigns, which is crucial to the overall brand. I'm reaching out to photographers back home to see if they could help me out in providing images from the island along with pictures from people back home. These assets will be great for the campaign but I am a little bit concerned about timing. More to come!

Week 7: Project Page Design Progress & New Component

Here’s my progress for week 7.

For this week, we’ve been asked to create a wireframe/mockup of our summary site which will house my Votemos Capstone project. My approach: simple & clean so once I have all my content I’ll be able to manipulate it. I’ll be using this site to house my summary and for now I think it will live under my “Work” tab.

Week 6: User/Target Audience Feedback

I’ve collected an early round of user/target audience feedback.

Feedback from D De Diseño:

I emailed with Luis, who’s the co-founder of the agency, early this week and he decided to review my prototype and do an exercise. The exercise consisted of him taking each section, within my brand guidelines, and playing around with them to see how he would interact with each of the elements I have created thus far. It is important to note, D De Diseño is an agency whose work specializes in simple graphics and the type, sometimes, does most of the talking. At this point, I believe their expertise will bring a balance to my work.

Below are his suggestions:

    • Color: Current red and blue might be too close to the political parties back home which will make people not think that it’s a nonpartisan platform. He has suggested to go back to my original pastel color but using the political party colors as a starting point. I am currently considering the color suggestions and hope to land on a color palette by next week.

    • Typeface: He believes the typeface I have chosen “Recoleta”, as the header, has enough weights to also act as body copy when creating print collateral. He suggested “Recoleta  medium” for the body copy. I am considering adding this direction to my brand as well.

    • Icons: Luis added a few suggestions for icons which I can see them speaking to the brand. I can also see that he got a portion of the inspiration from the motion graphics video where the circles jump inside the voting box. I really want to expand on these icons and see how it can be turned into a pattern which will speak to my motion graphics video.

    • List of inspirational material: He has also shared a list of material that serves as design inspiration but also supports the voice of the campaign.

      • Below, you’ll find his list:

1. Soberanía Exitosa: Ángel Collado Scwarz

2. El cerebro del puertorriqueño

3. Película: NO, Dirigida por Pablo Larraín, Actor: Gael García

4. Documental: Los Sures: Este no se si tenga que ver pero debes verlo,  esta super interesante.

It is important to note: Tomorrow, I hope to talk to Luis and we plan on debriefing his exercise a little bit more along with hearing his team’s feedback around my project. Sharing my work with other people, especially people back home, has been an incredible process because it helps me think through my design even more. It also helps build momentum and excitement around the finish product(s).

Feedback from two users:

I talked with two Puerto Rican friends, who currently go to the UofM, and shared with them my design and overall idea for Votemos. Here’s their feedback:

    • Refreshing: “This is an approach to local politics we have never seen before and don’t think others back home have. We are aware of the “Get out. Vote” campaign that always runs in the USA but never in Puerto Rico. Also, your design stands out from what is usually thrown out in local politics. ”

    • Votemos: “The name is great. Not only does it unite people but it’s also a call to action. One thing you should consider, based on the success you have in the island, is bringing the campaign to the USA and focusing on the LATINX communities around each state. LATINX usually have a low voter turnout and this brand can help.”

    • Logo: “Simple and straight to the point. Also, clever, by using the V as a check mark.

Week 5: Prototype

Topic, resources, means of creation, and proposed components for messaging will be discussed and examined for a level of rigor appropriate for completion of the master's degree. Votemos PR wants to address the lack of voter registration and access to political information in Puerto Rico. I am working to solve this issue by combining design and research while making all of this accessible to Puerto Ricans. Information will be accessed by an online platform while social media and print collateral will drive awareness. This project is playing off of my three strong skillsets “"art, communication, and connection."

  • The project will be program-encompassing and representative of the Master of Arts in Graphic and Web Design.  After being at MCAD for two years, I believe Votemos PR is capturing all my different skillets I’ve acquired throughout my years in the program. Everything from print foundation, to brand guidelines, to motion graphics and web design is being represented in this project. I will say when I started ideating Votemos, I was not taking print into account so this will be an area that I will be working on a little bit more

  • Research and collected data must be accurate and verifiable, with sources listed and accessible.  Definitely, every week I have been collecting articles, information, details about partners, and even classmate feedback on my google doc.: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14ds09Awg7h2uVf9KgYXE_39jbq-AALiPYtfxYJ7qfR0/edit Even though I have been collecting this information, I need to take some time this week and revisit everything that I've gathered so I can keep working towards my weekly goals.

  • Consistent documentation of process to further articulate intentions of what you're making. For this project, I’ve decided to use my website’s blog as my form for documentation. Thus far, every week I have been posting my progress and any updates along the way. Review here: https://www.holamonicas.com/blog/

  • In addition to other exhibition offerings and presentations, the final project, along with its process, will be accessible and discoverable for viewing as an online gallery. Yes, my current project is being housed in my website’s blog and will create an individual section for it within my portfolio.

  • The project should allow for community engagement and partnership. I am very excited for this part because after getting in contact with D De Diseño, local agency in Puerto Rico, i would like to see where our partnership goes in the upcoming months. Thus far, they have offered to provide feedback but would like to discuss how to make this an active campaign in the island.

Week 2: Project Brief Revisited

Based on the feedback received through Tuesday's Discussion Board posts, make appropriate adjustments to your Project Brief slidedeck.

Currently working on a project brief which will serve as my capstone piece for Fall 2018.
